Hello,
Thank you for taking this survey. We are interested in gathering information about ASL signs. This information will be used to help develop experiments and materials that will help us understand how ASL is processed and will be used to improve Deaf education.
During this survey you will see approximately 60 signs and we are going to ask you four different questions about these signs.
1) Sign Frequency.
We know a lot of signs, but not all signs are used or seen everyday. A sign like EAT or NAME is a sign that we might use or see everyday or every-other day. If a sign is seen or used very often we would call this a "frequent" sign. Other signs like SKELETON or ROOSTER are signs we know, but we might not encounter these very often. We would say these are infrequent or rare. Some words like TREE or SHIRT may be moderately frequent.
a. Rate the Frequency. As you see each sign think about whether you tend to use or see this sign a lot (frequently) or only rarely. If you feel this sign is frequently encountered you should rate it "high" on the scale perhaps a 6 or 7. If you think the sign not used or seen very often then you should rate it low, perhaps a 1 or 2. If you think it is moderate then you could rate this as 3, 4 or 5. There are no right or wrong answers. We are just asking you for your opinion about how common or uncommon these signs are based upon your experience. When you answer rate the items in the survey please try to make use of the full scale from 1 to 7.
b. Rate your confidence. After you decide, we will ask you to rate how confident you feel about your rating decision. If you are very sure about your answer then mark 6 or 7 if you are unsure of your answer then mark 1, or 2, if only moderately sure then use 3, 4 or 5.
2) Age you learned this sign
We all learn words at different ages. A word like MOTHER or MILK is one of the first signs we may have learned, a word like COMMUNIST or CHEMISTRY is a sign that were added to your vocabulary later, perhaps in High School. Other words like PAGER or iPHONE are signs we may have just recently learned. For each sign we want you to estimate when you think you leaned this sign.
a. At what age did you learn the sign?
We want to know about the sign itself. Try to your best to judge the time you learned the ASL sign. You may also know an English word for this concept. But you, we want to know about the sign (not the English word). There are no right or wrong answers just try your best to estimate when you learned the sign. We are just asking you for your opinion when you think you learned this sign based on your personal experience.
b. Rate your confidence. After you decide, we will ask you to rate how confident you feel about your decision. If you are very sure about your answer then mark 6 or 7 if you are unsure of your answer then mark 1, or 2, if only moderately sure then use 3, 4 or 5.
